BLACKSBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis dropped a 7-0 decision at No. 46 Virginia Tech on Thursday afternoon in the Dukes' third of four straight in-state contests.
The Hokies (7-2) earned the doubles point with wins over the Dukes (3-3, 1-0 CAA) at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, leaving the No. 1 doubles match unfinished. When it was halted, senior Robert Stirlingand freshman Tristan Stitt were leading Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro, the 12th-ranked doubles team in the nation, 5-2.
Heading into singles play, Virginia Tech used three consecutive two-set wins in the bottom half of the lineup to clinch the team victory.
Stirling took Amerigo Contini to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set 6-4, Stirling tied it up with a 6-3 win in set two. Contini and Stirling fought point-for-point in the third set, which the Hokie finally took at 11-9.
Junior Sebastian Salinas battled 20th-ranked Monteiro at No. 1 singles, falling in two sets (6-1, 7-5).
The Dukes are back on the courts this Sunday, Feb. 28, to take on George Mason at 1 p.m. in Vienna, Va.
