TOWSON, Md. - Late runs sunk James Madison on Sunday afternoon, as the Dukes dropped a pair of games to Towson, 3-2 and 8-4, in the final two contests of this weekend's three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Schuerholz Park.
Â
The Dukes fell to 13-18 (4-4 CAA) with the losses, which marked their first series loss in league play this season, while Towson improved to 13-18 (4-1 CAA) in the win. The teams were forced to play a doubleheader on Sunday after Saturday's contest was postponed due to inclement weather.
Â
Sophomore designated hitter
Logan Quimuyog went 3-for-8 across the two contests, while junior left fielder
Ky Parrott and sophomore right fielder
Adam Sisk each notched a pair of hits for the Dukes. Junior first baseman
Brett Johnson also hit his sixth homer of the season in the afternoon's second bout.
Â
GAME ONE
In the day's opening game, a seven-inning contest, Towson used a go-ahead solo home run to right field to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth and held on to claim the victory.
Â
The Dukes erased a pair of deficits on the afternoon, tying things at 1-1 in the second when Sisk came home on a wild pitch, then knotting things at 2-2 in the top of the sixth when junior catcher
Zach Tondi scooted home on a passed ball.
Â
With two outs in the bottom half of the inning, however, first baseman Colin Dyer slapped a fastball to right that dropped over the wall and gave the Tigers the final advantage.
Â
Sophomore lefty
Colton Harlow turned in another solid start for the Dukes, yielding just two runs across five frames and striking out six.
Â
GAME TWO
JMU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the day's second contest, but a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth and three more runs in the eighth carried Towson to the comeback win.
Â
Johnson opened the scoring with a two-run, opposite-field blast that brought Parrott home with two outs. Senior third baseman
Kyle Weston immediately followed with a single, allowing Sisk and senior center fielder
Tyler Carroll to tack on an RBI double and an RBI triple, respectively.
Â
That would be all the Dukes' scoring for the day, however, as Towson catcher Tristan Howerton racked up six RBIs to lead the Tigers back. Howerton notched an RBI single in the second before putting Towson up for good with a grand slam in the fourth and adding a solo shot to open the scoring in the three-run eighth.
Â
SETTING THE TABLE
Junior left fielder
Ky Parrott has served as the Dukes' leadoff hitter in each of the last eight games, reaching base to open JMU's first inning in six of those, including both of Sunday's contests.
Â
Five of those six have been walks, as the Herndon, Va., native has drawn a total of 11 free passes across his eight games in the leadoff spot.
Â
UP NEXT
The Dukes will return home this week for the first time since March 27, a period that spans eight games, when they welcome VMI to Harrisonburg for a contest at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12. JMU picked up a 12-8 win over the Keydets on March 8 in Lexington.
Â
In-state rival William & Mary will then come to Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park over the weekend as the Dukes continue their CAA slate. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 15, with Saturday and Sunday's contests scheduled for 4 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
