ORLANDO, Fla. – Megan Good allowed only one hit in a 1-0 shutout over Boston College (10-9), but No. 12/13 James Madison (15-3) stumbled 4-0 to Mercer (11-10) to split Saturday's slate at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic inside the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Good notched her seventh consecutive shutout appearance as the junior allowed just two base runners in the contest while striking out nine batters in the outing.
The right-hander allowed one runner on in the first with help of a defensive error by the Dukes before the Eagles knocked a single in the third inning, but Good answered by retiring 14 consecutive batters to close the game.
James Madison sprinkled five hits throughout the contest, but only needed a lone run to top the Eagles. After freshman Kierstin Roadcap reached second on a BC error with two outs in the top of the third, Morgan Tolle drove home pinch runner Ashley Samuels on a single to right field.
The victory was a historic one for Head Coach Mickey Dean as he earned his 200th victory at the helm of the Dukes.
Freshman Odicci Alexander was tagged with the loss in Saturday's contest against Mercer. The right-hander went 2.1 innings allowing four runs off five hits off two hits while striking out two. Alexander fell to 5-3 on the season. Redshirt sophomore Jessica McCabe tossed the final 4.2 innings. McCabe shut down the Bears allowing just two hits with one strike out.
The Bears struck early with a big first inning with a three-run home run from Abby Walsh. Mercer added a run in the third with a RBI single from Quirisas Mauga.
The Dukes notched six hits in the contest while loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't bring a run across, leaving eight runners stranded in the game. The loss marked just the second time this season JMU has been shut out in a game.
QUOTING COACH DEAN
"We always talk about your energy and your effort has to be better than your opponent's. Mercer's energy and effort was way better than ours. We weren't ready to play. We weren't focused. We weren't good in the circle. We were horrible in our at bats. That's what happens."
MILESTONE FOR DEAN
In his fifth season with JMU, Head Coach Mickey Dean tallied his 200th victory as a Duke. Joining the program in 2013, Dean has averaged 46 wins per season and has carried the program to four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances, including JMU's first berth to a NCAA Super Regional a season ago. In 11 seasons coaching at the Division I level, Dean holds a 441-166 (.727) record.
