HARRISONBURG, Va. – Head Coach
Steve Secord announced the James Madison men's tennis program has signed two future student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, completing the class 2024.
"It is hard to replace the four guys we have graduating," Secord said. "Paul, Tate, Josh and Damon have had tremendous careers and aren't finished yet! I think Mario and Oscar will fit our team culture well. They are genuinely good guys who love tennis and know that James Madison University is the perfect opportunity to assist their development academically, as tennis players and as young men who will graduate and lead positive, productive lives. I look forward to working with both guys over the next four years. Go Dukes!"
The newest signees will enroll at JMU in the fall of 2020, competing for the Dukes beginning in the 2020-21 season.
Oscar Hernandez | Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain / Telesforo Bravo
- Six-time regional champion
- Five-time Tenerife champion
- Reached the doubles quarterfinals in the national championship in Spain
Secord on Oscar: "Oscar is from the same area as current player
Alvaro Arce and has had similar success. Al has been a force for us at the top of the lineup and I expect Oscar to do the same. He has a big serve and his game is going to fit well into the collegiate game. Oscar has been successful not only on the singles court but in doubles as well. Having a player come in and be able to contribute in both singles and doubles doesn't always happen but Oscar should help us in both areas."
Mario Peña | Madrid, Spain / Colegio Cumbre
- Claimed eight tournament titles while in high school
- Competed in five ITF tournaments, winning championships at the Torneo Club Tenis Cabrerizos and Torneo Vicalvaro
- Won a championship at the Tournament Tennis Salamanca
- Named tournament champion in tournaments at Las Rozas, Galapagar, Las Rozas Tierra Batida, Ciudad de Salamanca, and Ciudad de Benavente
Secord on Mario: "Mario should step into the middle to upper part of our lineup right away. He has a big forehand and is able to dictate points off that powerful side. Mario is the type of guy who is going to thrive in college. He is solid now and has all the necessary parts of his game to be good right away. However, training and competing at our level is going to elevate his level and he is going to be a top player for us."
