ALEXANDRIA, Va – James Madison men's tennis won 5-2 over Georgetown on Saturday night at the Belle Haven Country Club to improve to 6-2 on the season, and snap the Hoyas three-match win streak.
Until today's match, the Dukes had lost every match in which they dropped the doubles point, and won every match where they won the point. Against the Hoyas, JMU dropped No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to lose the doubles point, but were able to pull through in five of six singles matches against Georgetown (3-4).
Junior
Damon Roberts was off the court fast, rolling Andrew Rozanov 6-4, 6-1. Roberts improved to an unblemished 6-0 on the dual season – joining sophomore
Alvaro Arce (6-0) as the only two Dukes to be undefeated.
After sophomore
Gonzalo Adis dropped his match in the No. 5 slot in straight sets, senior
Pierre Kohler earned a dramatic 6-2, 7-5 straight-set win. Kohler, up 6-5 in the second set, came back from 40-0 down to break Rohan Kamdar and put the Dukes up 2-1. Minutes later, Arce continued his torrid start to the dual season, winning a 6-3, 7-5 contest.
Junior
Paul Mendoza earned the clinching honors, battling through a long match to eventually earn a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory.
"Much of the first set was a mirror image of a private lesson I had earlier this week which made me feel very comfortable in this match," Mendoza said. "The second set had very little rhythm and both of us were being very loud and explosive. But when it came down to it, I was louder."
Mendoza saw four set point slip away before finally going up 5-1 in the first set tiebreak. He then let that lead dwindle, before closing out the first set and eventually closing out the match.
With the win in hand, freshman
William Karpinski won his match at No. 6 singles 6-2.

QUOTING COACH STEVE SECORD
It was great to come back and win after dropping the doubles point. Winning a match like this will help with all the other tight matches. It always feels good beating them. The guys handled themselves well in tough situations today. They ignored the opponents well and focused on what they needed to do to pick up the win.
