ANNAPOLIS, Md – With four singles win and the doubles point, James Madison men's tennis earned a 5-2 victory over Navy at the USNA Tennis Courts.
The Dukes improved to 12-5 while the Midshipmen sunk to 19-12.
Sophomore
Gonzalo Adis and freshman
William Karpinski earned a quick, 6-3 doubles win at No. 2. Minutes later, juniors
Josh Raymundo and
Tate Steinour broke at love to take their match at No. 3, 6-4, and clinch the doubles point.
Although the doubles point was in hand, sophomore
Alvaro Arce and senior
Pierre Kohler fought to a 7-6 (5) win over the No. 38 ranked doubles team in the country, comprised of Jack Dabek and Andrew Ton.
Junior
Paul Mendoza kept momentum on the Dukes' side with a 6-3, 6-0 dispatching of Greg Durham at No. 3. Adis was soon to follow, with a 6-2, 6-2 dominant victory of his own, playing at No. 4. The four remaining matches were tight until the end, with JMU and Navy each taking two.
Steinour came through in the clutch, earning a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win to clinch the match at 4-0.
"I played a well-balanced game today," Steinour said. "I was consistent from the baseline and patient in waiting on the right ball to attack. That was important because of how windy it was, making it tough to hit your best shot."
The junior is now 4-2 on the dual season.
Seconds after Steinour clinched, Karpinski closed out a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win to push the Dukes' lead to 5-0. Sophomore
Alvaro Arce and senior
Pierre Kohler both fell in the remaining matches, giving the Dukes a 5-2 win.
