ELON, N.C. – In a match that was tighter than the score, James Madison men's tennis lost 7-0 at Elon in Colonial Athletic Association play to drop to 10-4 as Elon improved to 9-3. Both teams are 1-1 in CAA play.
After juniors
Paul Mendoza and
Tate Steinour dropped their match at No. 3 doubles, havoc ensued on courts two and three. Freshman
William Karpinski and sophomore
Gonzalo Adis trailed 6-5, 0-40 on Karpinski's serve when the freshman served out of four match points to force a tiebreak. Meanwhile, on court one, sophomore
Alvaro Arce and senior
Pierre Kohler won a crucial deuce point to lead 5-4. However, Arce and Kohler would fall 7-5, on another deuce point, to interrupt Karpinski and Adis' match point they had on their racket, at 7-6 in the tiebreaker.
"As a team, in doubles, we have to trust our partner more," senior
Pierre Kohler said. "Especially on the deuce points, I think we, as a team, need to be more confident with ourselves instead of going back and forth on who should take that deuce return."
The momentum carried over from doubles to singles, as the Dukes dropped the opening set on all six courts. Karpinski and junior
Damon Roberts would fight their way into third sets, but ultimately came up short, both in super-tiebreakers.
"Mentally we are a stronger team. I love seeing all of the guys coming back in the second set," Kohler said. "I want to see Elon again, definitely. This is no excuse, but we'll be even more ready once we practice and play more outside matches."

QUOTING HEAD COACH STEVE SECORD
We were a little shell shocked over the doubles. Right now, they are a little bit better than us in singles. They're a good team, but we're a good team. The more we play outside the better we will get. We're capable to play at that level, it's making a bit of a transition, and we'll get there. To pinpoint something, everything was short for us today and our net clearance wasn't great. We couldn't really finish a point, and that's tougher to do outside, so that's something that we'll improve on in practice as the weather gets nicer.
