EDISTO BEACH, S.C. - Freshman
Kate Owens played her final 11 holes in 2-under on Monday, earning the first medalist honors of her career and setting a program record for 54 holes as the James Madison women's golf team closed out play at the Edisto Island Invitational, hosted by Charleston Southern at the par-71, 5,902-yard Plantation Course at Edisto.
Owens racked up five more birdies on the day, closing the tournament with 15 to lead the entire field as she carded a final-round 1-under 70 that erased a three-shot deficit and earned her co-medalist honors among the impressive 86-player field.
Her weekend score of 68-69-70=207 (-6) set a new 54-hole program record for scoring, besting the previous record of 211 (-2) shot by Nicole Sakamoto at the Golfweek Division I Program Challenge on Sept. 11-13, 2011. The victory was also the first for a JMU golfer since Shabril Brewer won the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Championship on April 19-21, 2013.
As a team, the Dukes carded a 312 in the final round, closing out the tournament in ninth place among 16 teams, just two strokes behind conference foe Elon in eighth.
Senior
Katie Turk posted a 7-over 78 in her final round, finishing in sole possession of 53rd at 25-over, while juniors
Lauren Comegys (80) and
Morgan Cox (87) closed out the tournament one stroke behind in ties for 54th. Senior
Jordan McKelvin finished tied for 40th at 20-over to close out the JMU scoring on the day.
QUOTING COACH BAKER
"Obviously, we're ecstatic about Kate's win. She's been working incredibly hard, so to see her play the way she did this weekend and come out with her first win and a new school record is amazing. We're really proud of her. As a team, we didn't finish the way we wanted. We know we need to get back and put a lot of work in as we get ready for the CAA Championship."
