FAIRFAX, Va. — The James Madison women's basketball team ended a five-game losing streak with a 69-61 win over George Mason Monday afternoon at EagleBank Arena. The Dukes improve to 4-7 while the Patriots fall to 6-6.
JMU used a big 45-point second half to push themselves past George Mason for their first road win of the season.
Kiki Jefferson led the Dukes with 21 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Claire Neff added a season-high 18 points while
Jaylin Carodine led all players on the boards with 14 rebounds.
Statistically Speaking
- Neff went 5-for-9 from long range.
- Annalica Goodman finished just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
- The Dukes shot 41.8% (23-55) from the floor and 34.8% (8-23) from beyond the arc.
- JMU outrebounded George Mason, 49-37.
First Quarter: Mason 11, JMU 9
- The Dukes got off to a rocky start, shooting just 1-for-8 from the floor in the first five minutes of the game.
- Mason, on the other hand, opened the game on a 9-2 run.
- JMU broke the streak with back-to-back layups bring the Dukes within three points at the 3:14 mark.
- Green then knocked down a triple for the final bucket of the quarter to cut the Patriots lead to just two.
Second Quarter: Mason 27, JMU 24
- Neff opened the second quarter with a three to put JMU on top, 12-11.
- Both teams traded baskets until the 2:16 mark when Tamia Lawhorne hit her second-straight three to put Mason up by five.
- Jefferson answered with her own three before a foul shot by Ouderkirk brought JMU back within one to end the half.
Third Quarter: JMU 45, Mason 41
- JMU outscored the Patriots 21-14 in the third frame.
- Neff registered 12 points in the third as she went 3-for-5 from long range.
- The Dukes used a 7-0 run to take a 39-35 lead at the 4:12 mark.
- The teams traded buckets in the final three minutes but JMU remained on top as they headed into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter: JMU 69, Mason 61
- George Mason used a 7-0 run to take a 48-47 lead at the 7:50 mark before the Dukes answered with their own 7-0 run to go up 54-48 at 6:22.
- Another 6-0 run by the Patriots tied it at 54 with 4:53 left to play.
- The biggest run of the quarter came from the Dukes as they scored eight unanswered points to take a 62-54 lead with just 1:45 left in regulation.
- The Patriots spent the remainder of the game fouling JMU in hopes to get the ball back in their possession, but the Dukes went 9-for-12 in the fourth quarter to secure their first win on the road.
