HARRISONBURG, Va. — The James Madison women's basketball team lost to Villanova, 76-67, Thursday evening at the Atlantic Union Bank Center. The Dukes' record drops to 3-6 while the Wildcats improve to 4-5.
Villanova's Maddy Siegrist recorded a double-double of 36 points and 17 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. The forward played all but two minutes as she led the Wildcats to their first win since Dec. 1.
JMU's shooting woes continued into Thursday's matchup as the Dukes recorded their fourth-straight game shooting under 20% from three-point range (14.3%, 2-of-14).
Kiki Jefferson finished one rebound shy of a double-double with her team-high 23 points and nine rebounds.
Jaylin Carodine led the Dukes on the boards for the fifth-straight game as she tied her career-best 15 rebounds.
Jamia Hazell added 15 points for JMU while
Claire Neff chipped in 13, nine of which came in the fourth quarter.
Statistically Speaking
- Villanova held the edge in assists, 21-3. Lucy Olsen led all players with seven handouts and Brooke Mullin dished out six.
- The Dukes outrebounded the Wildcats, 43-39.
- Even though the Dukes recorded more turnovers than the Wildcats (13 to 11), JMU took advantage of Villanova's mistakes to score 13 points off turnovers while the Wildcats scored just eight.
First Quarter: Villanova 22, JMU 15
- Villanova went 4-for-7 from three-point range to put the Wildcats up by as many as nine in the opening frame.
- JMU saw their best shooting come in the first quarter, logging a field goal percentage of 42.9%.
Second Quarter: Villanova 42, JMU 32
- The Wildcats committed no turnovers in the second quarter while JMU registered five errors.
- Villanova was docked for eight fouls, allowing the Dukes to go 10-for-12 from the line.
Third Quarter: Villanova 56, JMU 46
- Jefferson went 4-for-5 from the floor to score eight points for JMU in the third.
- Both teams shot 37.5% from the floor, but Villanova won the battle of the quarter, 14-13.
Fourth Quarter: Villanova 76, JMU 67
- The fourth quarter was the only frame where JMU outscored the Wildcats (21-20).
- Villanova saw their largest lead of 15 come at the start of the fourth quarter after a three-pointer by Lior Garzon.
- The Dukes brought themselves back within six following a 10-1 run, but the Wildcats answered with a three and a pair of foul shots to go back up by 11.
- Villanova's final seven points came from the foul line as the Wildcats went 7-for-10 in the final two minutes.
