WILMINGTON, N.C. – After waiting four hours and 30 minutes due to weather and field conditions, James Madison softball (17-1, 6-1) recorded its fifth shutout of the season defeating UNCW (8-16, 4-3) 1-0 on Saturday night at Boseman Field. Alissa Humphrey (8-0) picked up her fourth shutout in the circle.
Hallie Hall lead the Dukes at the plate going 1-for-2 with a RBI single and one walk. Logan Newton scored the lone run of the game while going 1-for-1 on stolen bases with one walk. JMU finished the game with four hits and two walks.
How It Happened
Humphrey went to work in the circle at the start of the game, striking out the first three Seahawk batters in the bottom of the first. The teams remained scoreless for three innings until Newton helped the Dukes take off by drawing a walk in the top of the fourth. During Lynsey Meeks' at bat, Newton stole second and capitalized on a Seahawk throwing error to move to third. Hall hit a single to right center to drive in Newton giving JMU the 1-0 lead over UNCW.
It was a battle of the pitchers for the rest of the game as Humphrey helped the Dukes shut the Seahawks' offense. In the bottom of the seventh, Humphrey gave up one hit but followed with three consecutive strikeouts to end the game. The freshman pitcher went the distance, while throwing 11 strikeouts for the second time this season. Humphrey only gave up two hits while not walking any batters.
