HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison field hockey utilized a stout defensive effort and pulled away in the second half for a 3-0 home-opening victory against Saint Francis on Sunday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.

The Dukes improved to 2-0 on the young season, while SFU dropped to 0-2.

JMU had three different goal scorers in
Diede Remijnse,
Emily Harrison and
Morgan Merritt.

Remijnse notched her first career goal early in the second quarter off a penalty corner, leading to a 1-0 halftime lead. The Dukes doubled its advantage late in the third off Harrison's first goal of the year, and Merritt put the game away in the opening seconds of the fourth with her first tally of 2021.

JMU's defense shut down almost any opportunity for Saint Francis, as the guests failed to take a shot until the final three and a half minutes of regulation.

The Dukes out-shot the Red Flash 25-3, including 18-1 in shots on goal. JMU also spent the majority of the game in the offensive end of the field, holding a 17-2 corners advantage.

Florien Marcussen played the opening 30 minutes in cage for the Dukes, never facing a single shot, while
Brandelynn Heinbaugh closed things out, making one save on three shots faced in the second half.

For SFU, Chloe South was solid in goal, making 13 saves, and the Red Flash also registered a pair of defensive saves.
