HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis took care of business in its home opener against Bucknell, winning 7-0 on Friday evening at the East Campus Tennis Courts.
JMU (1-0) claimed two of three doubles matches and won each singles match in straight sets to complete the sweep of the Bison (0-1).
In doubles play, junior
Holden Koons and redshirt freshman
Youssef Sadek set the tempo with a 6-3 victory on court one over the Bison's Michael Owen and Nick Mueller. Sophomores
Oscar Hernandez and
Mario Pena followed quickly behind on court three to clinch the doubles point, beating Nicolas Grunig and Ink Chen, 6-2.
Koons continued his strong play at the top singles spot, rolling to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mueller. Sadek also won in straight sets, rallying in the second set to complete a 6-2, 7-5 win for his first home victory as a Duke.
Senior
William Karpinski clinched the match for JMU on court two, as he won in straight sets over Owen, 6-2, 6-3. Hernandez earned the fifth point for the Dukes on court four. He triumphed over Chen, 6-2, 6-1.
Freshman
Edson Sanchez joined Sadek in earning not just his first home victory but also his first collegiate triumph, as he beat Carlos Carvalho, 6-2, 6-1 on court six. Pena closed out the team sweep on court five with a 6-2, 6-1 victory of his own over Nicolas Grunig.
