HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis continued its winning streak to begin dual-match play, cruising to a 7-0 victory against Longwood on Friday afternoon at the East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Dukes improved to 4-0 this spring, while the Lancers fell to 1-2. It was JMU's third consecutive victory against Longwood and its ninth win in the last 10 meetings.
It's the first time since the 1989-90 season that JMU has begun with a 4-0 record, as the Dukes opened that year at 7-0 before finishing 16-2 overall.
JMU opened the day with a doubles sweep to gain the early 1-0 lead.
On court one, the team of
Holden Koons and
Youssef Sadek continued their hot start to the spring, cruising to a 6-2 win against Rosen Naydenov and Luis Reis to improve to 4-0 in dual-match play and 5-0 overall this year as a tandem.
The Dukes captured the doubles point on court two minutes later when
William Karpinski and
Oscar Hernandez dispatched Oscar Weinberg and Guillermo Cagigas, 6-2. JMU completed the sweep with a 6-3 win on court three by
Stefan Petrovic and
Edson Sanchez in their bout versus Ernest Rocabert and Nikhil Kulkarni.
Just over 45 minutes later, Koons doubled the lead with a dominant singles performance on court one, defeating Naydenov by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Koons remains unbeaten this spring, going to 4-0 at JMU's top singles spot.
On court two, Karpinski took down Cagigas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to make it a 3-0 match lead and bring JMU to the brink of victory. Like Koons, Karpinski moves to 4-0 this spring at the #2 singles position.
Hernandez clinched the JMU win on court four, as he quickly beat Weinberg, 6-2, 6-3. The Dukes made it a 5-0 lead after a marathon match on court three, which lasted over two hours. Sadek was able to push past Jourdan Kast for a 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-4 win, rallying back from down 4-2 in the third set.
Sanchez also remained undefeated in singles this spring (4-0) with a stellar performance on court five, downing Rocabert, 6-2, 6-1 to extend JMU's lead to 6-0. The final match was played under an eight-game pro set format, as
Mathieu Josserand capped off the day with an 8-4 victory against Reis.
