LYNCHBURG, Va. – James Madison softball dropped a pair of games on the final day at the Liberty Softball Invitational, falling 4-3 to George Washington and 4-0 to Liberty on Sunday at Kamphuis Field at the Liberty Softball Stadium.

The Dukes moved to 4-9 on the season. The Buff and Blue improved to 7-10 and the Flames improved to 14-6.

Over the two games,
Hannah Shifflett led the team with three hits, including a solo home run over George Washington.

GAME 1 – George Washington 4, JMU 3
The Dukes and the Buff and Blue went head-to-head with hits, but George Washington was able to hold their lead after JMU scored its three runs in the final three frames.

GW took an early lead in the first with a two-RBI single and followed up in the third with an RBI single up the third base line.

Hannah Shifflett tallied her tenth RBI of the season to put the Dukes on the board in the top of the fifth. GW responded in the bottom of the fifth with a home run, and increased its lead to 4-1.

The Dukes battled in the seventh inning, with Shifflett hitting her fourth homer of the season, followed by an RBI double to right center from
Lauren Bernett. JMU couldn't complete the rally, however, and the Dukes fell 4-3 in the end.

Alissa Humphrey went 4.0 innings for JMU, allowing four earned runs and striking out two batters.

GAME 2 – Liberty 4, JMU 0
Â
Liberty did all its damage in the first inning, with four runs on two two-RBI singles. The Dukes were able to prevent the Flames from scoring further for the rest of the game, but were unable to respond.

Bernett,
Abbie Campbell and
Jasmine Hall each tallied a hit to pace JMU on offense.
Â
Humphrey pitched all six innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out three batters.

The Dukes will return to Harrisonburg for their home opener against Norfolk State on Thursday, March 10 at 3 p.m.
