HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis capped off hits home-opening weekend with an easy 7-0 victory against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon at East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Dukes improved to 4-2 this season and 2-0 at home, while the Mountaineers fell to 0-2.
In a match played in just over two hours, JMU swept through doubles and won all five singles matches that were contested. The sixth singles match was not played due to an unavailable athlete by Mount St. Mary's.
How It Happened
Doubles
- JMU took early control with three quick doubles victories.
- The team of Julian Lozano and Edson Sanchez handled Andrew Allen and Ryan Isgett, 6-1, on court two for the doubles advantage.
- Moments later on court three, Aathreya Mahesh and Canon Secord locked down their first home doubles win at JMU with a 6-1 triumph against Oscar Castro and Nick Huynh.
- JMU completed the doubles sweep on court one, as Holden Koons and Youssef Sadek bested Christos Dagklis and Pablo Martinez Zuccardi, 6-3.
Singles
- All five singles matches were straight-set victories for JMU, as the Dukes conceded a total of just five games over the five wins.
- Mount's top singles player had to withdraw after doubles play, and with no other player present, lineup adjustments were made and JMU received a win by default in the No. 6 singles slot for a 2-0 lead.
- JMU extended the lead to 3-0 on court two, as Lozano completed his perfect weekend with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Isgett.
- Koons followed minutes later, taking down Martinez Zuccardi on court one, 6-1, 6-1, to clinch the win for the Dukes.
- Sadek made it a 5-0 lead for the hosts on court three, dispatching Huynh, 6-2, 6-1.
- Sanchez did not allow Allen to win a single game, rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 victory on court four.
- Secord rounded out the match with his first career home singles win on court six. He took control from the opening serve, dominating Castro in a 6-0, 6-0 final.
Head Coach Steve Secord on the Win
"When you have a match like today where you feel like you should win, we told the guys before that sometimes those are harder, so let's not slack and take things easy. I think they took that challenge and just kind of built on it. Obviously looking at the scores, we did a good job of that."
Coach on Watching His Son Win His First Home Matches
"It's fun, I'm excited for him. I'm sure he was nervous. You've got the hometown fans out. The support this weekend was great. For both matches, we had good crowds, so you really appreciate that. But yeah, super happy for him and hope to see some more."
