HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison returned to the win column in convincing fashion with a 6-1 victory against visiting UNCG on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
The Dukes improved to 6-4 on the year, while the Spartans dropped to 2-9.
In what was just the fifth meeting all-time and first in Harrisonburg, JMU improved to 3-2 against UNCG.
JMU's
Julian Lozano, Aathreya Mahesh,
Youssef Sadek and
Edson Sanchez all went 2-0 with wins in doubles and singles, while
Holden Koons didn't concede one frame in his singles victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU dominated on one court and rallied on another to clinch the doubles point and early 1-0 lead.
- On court three, Mahesh and Sadek cruised to a 6-0 victory against Andrew Black and Harrison Gwynn.
- Trailing 4-3 on court two, the team of Lozano and Sanchez rattled off three straight games versus Christopher Johns and Tymofiy Khrystyuk to down the UNCG duo, 6-4, and secure the 1-0 match lead.
- The final match on court one, featuring JMU's Koons and Francisco Sinopoli and UNCG's David Flisberg and John Gabelic, went unfinished while tied at 4-4.
Singles Play
- All six singles matches finished in straight sets, with JMU claiming five of them en route to the home win.
- Sanchez doubled the lead to 2-0 on court five, as he rolled past Johns, 6-2, 6-0.
- Koons dominated play on court one, not dropping a game in his 6-0, 6-0 victory against Flisberg.
- Mahesh clinched the match on court six, where he took down Black by scores of 6-1, 6-4. Black was down 5-1 and trimmed Mahesh's lead to 5-4 in the second before the Duke won a pivotal deuce point to secure the win.
- Sadek trailed 3-2 in the opening set of his match against Devon Moskowitz but would go on to win 10 of the final 12 games with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph on court four.
- UNCG got on the board with a victory on court three. Khrystyuk outlasted Sinopoli, 7-5, 6-3, for the Spartan's lone point.
- Lozano capped off the afternoon with a solid win on court two. Trailing 5-3 in the opening set against Gabelic, he rallied to force a tiebreak, winning that by a count of 7-1. He used the momentum in the second set, finishing the day with a 7-6 (1), 6-1 win.
MATCH NOTES
- The doubles tandem of Lozano and Sanchez won their eighth straight doubles match together, as they're now 5-0 this spring on court two and 14-2 when combining in fall tournament matches.
- Mahesh and Sadek moved to 3-0 this year while teaming up in doubles but won for the first time in dual matches.
- Koons won his sixth straight singles match, improving to 8-2 at the No. 1 spot this spring.
