NORFOLK, Va. – James Madison men's tennis kept it close in singles play, but couldn't get over the hump, dropping a 5-2 decision at #67 Old Dominion in both teams' regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
The Monarchs improved to 15-9 on the year and 7-1 in Sun Belt Conference play, while the Dukes fell to 12-9 overall and 3-5 in league matches.
Depending on results in Sunday's final matches across the league, there's a possibility of the two squads rematching in the Sun Belt Championship quarterfinals, as the bracket will be unveiled on Sunday, April 16.
ODU cruised through doubles and won four of six singles matches. For JMU,
Edson Sanchez rallied to win a three setter, while
Aathreya Mahesh won in straight sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- ODU claimed a pair of 6-1 victories on courts one and three, while leading 5-2 in an unfinished bout on court two.
- The Monarchs first won on court three, as Francois Le Tallec and Cose Rolland De Ravel defeated Youssef Sadek and Canon Secord.
- Shortly after on court one, Younes Lalami and Brandon Perez, ranked 85th nationally, downed Holden Koons and Francisco Sinopoli to clinch the doubles point.
Singles Play
- Le Tallec kept the momentum going into singles, as he cruised past Julian Lozano, 6-1, 6-1, on court two to double the lead.
- ODU extended the advantage to 3-0 on court three, as De Ravel took down Sadek, 6-2, 6-2.
- JMU got on the board over on court six, as Mahesh battled past Nicola Vidal, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
- ODU clinched the match on court four after Jakob Cadonau squeaked out a tiebreak win to down Sinopoli, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
- Sanchez added to JMU's tally with a victory on court five. After dropping a narrow first set, he bounced back to defeat Maldoner, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
- The last finish came over on court one, where Koons initially led 6-2, 5-4 before dropping a tough decision to Lalami. The top Monarch rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 triumph.
