HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison Field hockey scored three second-half goals to overpower Columbia for a 3-2 win on Friday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.

JMU improves to 2-1 and keeps its home winning streak alive with seven consecutive victories in Harrisonburg. The Lions move to 0-1 and head to Delaware for a Sunday afternoon contest.

Three Dukes registered goals today as junior
Cassidy Strittmatter and senior
Mia Julian struck in the third, while classmate
Tori Carawan added to the lead early in the fourth. Julian also recorded an assist today, along with freshman
Kiki Postma and sophomore
Charlotte Duthoit.

Senior goalkeeper
Brandelynn Heinbaugh picked up her second win this season and 16th of her career. Columbia netminder Katie Wimmer tallied seven saves on the afternoon.

How It Happened
- Despite 10 total corners between the two teams, the first half finished 0-0 with only one save needed.
- JMU opened the scoring late in the third quarter as Julian found Strittmatter on a rush, passing across the goal for the strike.
- Later in the period, Julian cashed in on a penalty corner with an assist from Postma.
- At the 11:03 mark of the final frame, freshman Brynna Hill connected with Duthoit, who quickly dished to Carawan to make it 3-0.
- The Lions answered with under eight minutes to go to cut the deficit to two.
- Columbia did not go away as Anabelle Brodeur found the back of the net on a penalty corner with less than a minute to go.
- The Dukes dug in defensively to thwart the Lions' final attack to hold on for the 3-2 win.

- James Madison has not lost at home since falling to #4 Louisville in overtime, 1-0, on Oct. 24, 2021.
- Julian paces the team in points with seven and is tied for the team lead in goals with two.
- For Postma and Duthoit, their helpers marked the first assists and points of their careers.
- The all-time series between JMU and Columbia is now tied 1-1.
- The Dukes led the Lions in shots (22-10) and shots on goal (10-3). Moreover, six corners are the most for JMU so far in 2023.
- James Madison had five players register a point in the victory, the first time five or more Dukes recorded a point since defeating #20 Duke last season on Sept. 25 when six Dukes achieved the feat.

"We got the win – we're going to take a lot of lessons out of this. We need more discipline in our game, we need to work with one another, we need more helpers out there, we need more connected hockey and we need more outcomes in the circle. We have practice down at Wake Forest tomorrow and we have to go back to the drawing board and create some good, disciplined hockey. I know this group has it in them, now it's my job to get it out of them."
