DAVIDSON, N.C. – James Madison men's tennis overcame a deficit for the second straight match, winning four singles matches to down Davidson, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Davidson Tennis Courts.
The Dukes won their second straight, improving to 3-5 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 4-3. It was JMU's second victory in a row over Davidson, having also beaten the Wildcats in 2022. The Dukes have also now won three of their last four in Davidson, dating back to 2006.
Davidson claimed the doubles point before JMU rallied back by winning four singles matches, including a pair in three sets.
Singles wins came in straight sets by
Youssef Sadek and
Markus Giersiepen, while
Esteve Agusti and
Edson Sanchez rallying back in three sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Davidson took the early advantage with a 6-1 win on court two, where Nico Pinzon and Udday Singh downed Giersiepen and Sadek, 6-1.
- In a tight match on court three, DC claimed the doubles point, as Luca Lovrich and Jerry Wang outlasted Sanchez and Francisco Sinopoli by a 6-4 margin.
- JMU also led the unfinished match on court one, as Agusti and Julian Lozano held a 5-4 lead on Maxwell Kachkarov and Juan Perez when doubles concluded.
Singles Play
- JMU squared the match at 1-1, with a convincing win on court one. Sadek avenged his doubles setback to Singh, cruising to a 6-2, 6-4 win at the top singles spot.
- The Dukes grabbed a 2-1 match lead with a victory on court four. In a back-and-forth bout, Giersiepen outlasted Sebastian Moran by scores of 7-5, 7-5.
- The final four singles matches would all get pushed to third sets, as JMU overcame a set deficit in three of those matchups.
- Davidson tied it back at 2-2, as Perez took control in the third for a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Lozano on court two.
- Agusti gave the lead right back to the Dukes on court three with a dominant performance in the third. He completed the comeback against Kachkarov by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
- Sanchez clinched the win for JMU on court six, overcoming Wang for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 triumph.
- Sinopoli was nearing a victory of his own against Pinzon on court five, needing just one more game when it went unfinished. He led the Wildcat by scores of 7-5, 6-7 (4), 5-3 when Sanchez ended things on the next court.

JMU returns home to host Radford on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. from Hillside Courts. This is the rescheduled match that was previously postponed on Feb. 11.
