HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison won a shortened midweek match against Radford, claiming a 4-0 men's tennis victory on Wednesday afternoon at East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Dukes won their third straight, improving to 4-5 on the year, while the Highlanders remained winless, at 0-7. It was also JMU's third win in a row in the series with Radford and the Dukes' fifth consecutive home win against RU.
JMU won two of three doubles matches and notched wins on courts one through three to clinch the win. Two of those singles wins ended early due to injury.
Esteve Agusti and
Julian Lozano led the way by teaming for a doubles win and collecting singles victories.
Youssef Sadek also produced the match-clinching point in singles play, while
Edson Sanchez and
Harrison Lee earned their first doubles dual victory as a tandem.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU had a dominant performance on court three, as Lee and Sanchez didn't concede a single game en route to a 6-0 victory against Manfredi Vergine and Dominik Wijntjes.
- Radford evened things on court two, as Robert Hagen and Filippo Marangoni took down Markus Giersiepen and Sadek, 6-2.
- The Dukes captured the doubles point on court one, where the team of Agusti and Lozano ran away from Tom Saporta and Guilherme Severin in a 6-3 triumph.
Singles Play
- JMU doubled its lead to 2-0 following an injury-shortened match on court three. After Agusti claimed the opening set, 6-2, Hagen retired, giving the Dukes the victory.
- The Dukes went up 3-0 by virtue of another win by retirement, this time on court two. Lozano won a tough first set and was rolling in the second when Saporta conceded while Lozano led 6-4, 4-0.
- Sadek closed the day with a victory on court one that wasn't without drama. In the first set, he trailed 3-0 before winning five straight games. Severin fended off four match points to force a tiebreak and led 4-0 in the breaker before Sadek rallied back to win it 7-5. He used that momentum into the second, earning a 7-6 (5), 6-3 triumph.
- All other singles matches were stopped, as the teams agreed to play until a clinch.
