GREENSBORO, N.C. – James Madison men's tennis opened fall tournament play by capturing 15 total victories at the UNCG Fall Invitational (Sept. 13-14), which included winning 10 singles matches and five doubles bouts at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Dukes competed in doubles play on Friday, while singles action took place on Saturday. Sunday's action was called due to inclement weather. JMU won nearly two thirds of its total matches, combining for a 15-8 record (.652).
Esteve Agusti led the way for JMU by going a combined 4-0, with 2-0 marks in both singles and doubles while playing at the top spot.
Freshman
Zach Fleishman also went unbeaten in his first collegiate tournament, going 3-0 with a pair of singles victories and one doubles win. Fellow freshman
Aurelien Schmitt also went 3-1 with wins in both doubles matches and a 1-1 split in singles.
In all, all eight competitors won at least one singles and one doubles match to open the fall.
Friday – Doubles Play
- JMU swept doubles play against North Carolina Wesleyan, while winning one match against Coastal Carolina and leading in another that went unfinished.
- The day was highlighted by the top tandem of Agusti and Schmitt. The duo captured a 6-1 win over NCWU's Luca Knese and Diego Segovia and later teamed for a 6-4 triumph over CCU's Jack Dixon and Emiliano Gonzalez.
- It was the first career wins for Schmitt, while the rookie duo of Fleishman and Dennis Wiebe downed NCWU's Rafhael Gastelu and Rodrigo Montes, 6-4, for their first college win.
Saturday – Singles Play
- JMU went 10-6 in singles play on day two of the UNCG Fall Invitational, including taking seven of eight in the afternoon bouts.
- Agusti continued his strong start with a pair of wins at the top singles slot, taking down Coastal Carolina's Eric Tripathi, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (9), and rallying past Campbell's Thomas Deapeau, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (3).
- Fleishman produced wins in his first two career singles matches, as he defeated CCU's Iannis Fernandes, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (5) and Campbell's Alexander Fragasso, 6-3, 6-4.
- All eight individuals won at least won singles match on the day, including Schmitt and Wiebe joining Fleishman for their first career singles victories.
Sunday – Rained Out
- JMU was scheduled for singles play and doubles if time permitted, but rain in the Greensboro area washed out the final day of the event.
