RICHMOND, Ky. – James Madison returned to the court after a near three-week layoff and was able to secure one singles win before dropping a 4-1 decision to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday morning at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
The Colonels evened their record to 5-5, while the Dukes fell to 0-2 on the season.
EKU secured the doubles point and registered singles wins on courts one, two and four to clinch the match.
Aurelien Schmitt claimed a straight-set victory on court three for JMU's lone point.
Host EKU grabbed the early 1-0 lead with doubles victories on court two (6-1) and three (6-2).
In singles play, Schmitt evened the match at 1-1, as he rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win against Joao Barreto on court three. Shortly after, Fernando Bulnes took a 6-2, 6-3 win from
Esteve Agusti on court two to give EKU the lead for good.
On court one, Nuno Pinheiro was able to slip past
Ryan Morgan by scores of 6-4, 6-3, rallying in the second to make it a 3-1 lead. The clinching point came on court four, as Ilie Cazac pulled away in the third set to beat
Francisco Sinopoli, at 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
Two other matches went unfinished, as
Zach Fleishman led Adrian Contreras on court five (6-2) while Kartik Parhar was a set up on
Harrison Lee on court six (7-5).
JMU heads to Louisville to face Bellarmine on Sunday, Feb. 8 in a 10:30 start at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
