HARRISONBURG, Va., Nov. 4, 2007 ? James Madison University picked up its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season with a 184.5-161.5 victory over UNC Wilmington while also falling to Towson University 228-119 in a pod meet on Saturday and Sunday at Savage Natatorium.
JMU is now 3-3 overall and 1-2 in CAA meets. UNCW is 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference. Towson is 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the CAA.
Head coach Samantha Smith commented on JMU's performance, "I am really happy to see the level of aggression and fire the team has when competing. Their bodies are tired but they continue to fight for each race and this mentality will transfer when they have an opportunity to race after getting some rest. We continue to swim smarter and race better with every opportunity and our goal is to be better everyday. So far we are doing that."
JMU was led by freshman Lisa Colapietro's (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) seven wins. She topped both the Seahawks and Tigers in claiming the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. She won the 100 in 1:06.73, three seconds better than her best time to date, and took the 200 in 2:24.71, besting her previous time by over a second.
In addition to Colapietro's four individual wins, she also picked up three relay wins. She swam the second leg of JMU's winning 400-yard medley relay that finished in 3:59.61. She was joined by freshman Morgan McCarthy (New Castle, Del./St. Mark's), sophomore Christina Gennari (Westerville, Ohio/Trinity Catholic), and sophomore P.J. Naber (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly). McCarthy, Colapietro, and Naber were joined by junior Jessica Lee (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) to take the 200 medley in 1:50.19 to top UNCW.
Freshman Jackie Hartman (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) had her best collegiate performance as she picked up a win over UNCW in the 200 individual medley, finishing third overall in 2:12.44. She also swam her best competitive time ever in the 400 IM in 4:41.10 to finish fourth.
