HARRISONBURG, Va., May 16, 2014 – Freshman heptathlete Summer Walter (Warren, Pa./Bayside (Va.)) qualified for the ECAC Championships to be held at Princeton University from May 16-18. The heptathlon field was filled with the top 35 point totals amongst ECAC teams during the spring season.
Walter's best performance came at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, where she finished second with 4,638 points. That point total, fueled by personal-best marks in the javelin, 100-meter hurdles and 800-meter run, ranks third on JMU's all-time list.
Walter will join 10 other JMU athletes travelling to Princeton to compete in individual events. The future looks bright for the Dukes as the group includes eight freshmen.
Three Dukes qualified for the championship meet in multiple events. Freshman Tessa Mundell (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) qualified in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs, but will compete in just the 5k. Kristen Greene (Colonial Heights, Va./Thomas Dale) will compete in the shot put but also qualified in the javelin. Freshman Annie Johnson (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) will compete in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
