WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – James Madison women's tennis used a 3-0 sweep through doubles competition as a spark for a 6-1 win against Morehead State at the Greenbrier on Saturday afternoon.
The Dukes, winners of three straight matches, sit at 4-2 overall with a 1-0 mark in Colonial Athletic Association action. The Eagles are 0-7 in spring duals thus far.
JMU jumped out to a 4-0 lead to clinch the match early, beginning with a complete sweep of doubles play for a 1-0 advantage. Junior Rachel Nelson and freshman Emma Petersenopened with a 6-0 win over Lindsey Wild and Alek Savic at No. 3 doubles before junior Timea Guibe and freshman Bella Heidenreichdropped Hayley Wild and Maria Orenella 6-1 at No. 2 doubles for the opening point. The victory marked the third straight for Guibe and Heidenreich as a duo.
In their only action of the day, freshman Abby Amos and junior Rebecca Harrisstretched their dual record to record to 4-0 with a 6-2 win over Zina Mehikic and Ayaka Terashi at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Kimmy Herrockkept the momentum rolling for JMU with a two-set win (6-3, 6-4) over Orenella at No. 3 singles to start solo play. The Tarpon Springs, Fla. native has won seven straight singles matches dating back to tournament play.
Guibe followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Terashi at No. 1 singles, setting Petersen up to secure match point at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hayley Wild.
At No. 5 singles, sophomore Dylan Owensnotched her seventh consecutive win with a two-set decision (7-5, 6-4) against Savic. At No. 6 singles, Heidenreich blanked Lindsey Wild in straight 6-0 sets to round out the scoring for JMU.
JMU continues its stay at the Greenbrier tomorrow when the Dukes take on West Virginia at 10 a.m.
