HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison celebrated its three women's tennis seniors in style, as it cruised to a 4-1 victory against George Mason on Sunday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
Â
The Dukes (11-9) closed their home slate by capturing two of three doubles matches and winning two of their three singles bouts in straight sets.
Â
It was the final home match for the senior trio of
Daria Munteanu,
Reka Matko and
Sophie Williams, all who won at least one match between doubles and singles. Munteanu captured wins in both, as she moved into a tie for seventh all-time at JMU with 131 combined victories.
Â
The Dukes opened the day with doubles victories on courts one and two to take the 1-0 lead. The duo of Brooklyn Hoffman and Williams rolled to a 6-1 win over Cenan Liu and Mary Young on court one. Shortly after,
Ariel Avidan and Munteanu finished things out with a 6-1 triumph versus Maya Bayat and Brooklyn Siegel.
Â
Singles was unique, as both the JMU women and men played simultaneously at Hillside Courts, with the JMU women playing on courts one through three. With the match format being a clinch scenario, singles began with the three seniors, who played at positions one, four and six.
Â
Munteanu wrapped up her home career with a convincing victory on court one, taking down Liu by scores of 6-2, 6-1. Mason got on the board to make it 2-1 when Noelle Talarek held off Williams for a 6-4, 6-4 win on court four.
Â
JMU moved the lead to 3-1 on court six, as Matko, who dropped the first set, was in a tight one in the third before Shivaani Ganesh had to retire with the scoreline at 6-7 (2), 6-0, 3-3. Minutes later, JMU capped off the win with
Anna Kantor coming through with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Rava Ramanantoanina on court five.
Â
Elsewhere, Avidan led Young, 5-2, in the opening set on court three, while Hoffmann was warming up on court two when Kantor clinched the match.
Â
JMU closes the regular season on Friday, April 17 with a trip to Boone, N.C., to face App State in a critical Sun Belt matchup. That match is set for a 10 a.m. start.
