HARRISONBURG, Va. – Jon Wegener has joined the James Madison women's tennis coaching staff as an assistant coach, Head Coach James Bryceannounced Friday.
"After a lengthy and thorough search, I am excited to welcome Jon to the Dukes family," Bryce stated. "His commitment to college tennis and passion for the game was evident throughout the interview process. Jon will bring a calm and balanced approach to the team, along with almost five years of collegiate coaching experience. I am confident that he will hit the ground running and be an excellent role model, mentor and coach for our young ladies."
Wegener has spent the last three years at Ball State as a graduate assistant coach (2015-17) for the men's tennis team and as a volunteer assistant coach (2014-15) for the women's tennis team. During his time on staff with the Cardinals, he coached a two-time MAC Player of Year, three All-MAC First Team players and eight MAC All-Academic student-athletes. Both of Ball State's teams also reached the MAC Tournament title match at least once with him as a coach.
His first assistant coaching position came at Taylor University, his alma mater, from 2012-13. Wegener has also been a tennis instructor at the Muncie Northwest YMCA for the last 10 years.
"I'm very fortunate to be joining the JMU women's tennis team," Wegener said. "Coach Bryce has done a phenomenal job building an environment of personal growth and success, both on the court and in the classroom. I'm excited to work alongside Coach Bryce and the players as we shoot for the CAA conference title."
Wegener spent two years at Taylor, graduating cum laude with his Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science in 2013. On the courts, he was named All-Mid Central Conference and advanced to the 2011 ITA Regional quarterfinals. He began his college career at Ball State, where he was the Mid-American Conference Tournament Champion in 2011. When he returned to Ball State as a coach, he earned his Master of Arts in English and is certified to teach English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).
STUDENT ASSISTANT
After completing her time on the competitive side of the court, Timea Guibe is rejoining the Dukes as a student assistant coach for the 2017-18 season.
Guibe closed out her two-year JMU career with First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association and All-State First Team honors for singles in 2017, putting together a team-best 26-8 overall singles record with an 18-6 mark in duals. With a 17-4 showing at the No. 1 position and wins in nine of her final 10 collegiate decisions, she picked up two CAA Player of the Week laurels during the spring. She also won the Bedford Cup Singles title and earned a No. 19 rating by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in the Atlantic Region's preseason rankings as a senior.
On the doubles side, she was selected All-CAA First Team and All-State Second Team alongside rising senior Kimmy Herrock. The duo was ranked No. 10 in the ITA Atlantic Region preseason rankings before going 10-10 in duals, all at the No. 1 position.
In the classroom, Guibe was a Dean's List student and a JMU Athletics Director Scholar-Athlete. She began her career at Mississippi State, posting a 36-26 overall record in singles for the Bulldogs.
