HARRISONBURG, Va -- James Madison men's tennis (5-2) used dominant play on Tuesday afternoon to sweep Hampton 7-0 and keep its record on the East Campus Tennis Courts unblemished.
Sophomore
Alvaro Arce and senior
Pierre Kohler along with the duo of freshman
William Karpinski and junior
Josh Raymundo both earned breaks while up 4-3 and closed out their sets 6-3 to take the doubles point. Hampton (0-3) defaulted the No. 3 doubles position and No. 6 singles slot.
In singles play, junior
Paul Mendoza steamrolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Hampton's Luke Thompson at the No. 3 slot. The lopsided victory is the only double-bagel win for the Dukes on the season.
"It was a very solid match from Paul today and probably his best match from beginning to end on the season," assistant coach
Jason Sinkoff said. "He never let up and played all the deuce points with lots of intensity. He was fired up after 6-0, 3-0 deuce points and that's what we want to see and that's why one reason he's a captain."
Following Mendoza was Arce, who earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 singles slot to stay perfect on the dual season and clinch the match at 4-0 for the Dukes. Minutes later, Kohler upended Fernando Fernandes 6-2, 6-4 to increase JMU's lead.
With the match well in hand, Karpinski and freshman
Eugene Clur both earned victories. Karpinski pummeled the backhand of Basil Post to come out on top 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 5 slot. Clur had to work a little harder, earning a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 win to complete the sweep.

QUOTING COACH SECORD
It's always good to get a 7-0 win. Doubles wise, it would've been nice to get a break a little earlier. But both teams getting it at 4-3 and serving it out was great. Looking forward to Georgetown, we're going to have to do some of the basics better -- like returning serve. I was proud of Paul for coming out with great focus and winning love and love, he could've easily dropped half a dozen games but he kept himself fired up. When you look at a team like Georgetown, we're going to need that level of focus and intensity. We're going to work hard on high percentage tennis and go up and give the Hoyas all they can handle.
