RICHMOND, Va – James Madison men's tennis dropped a tight doubles point before going on to fall in five of six singles matches, eventually losing to VCU 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
JMU is now 11-5 on the dual season while VCU improved to 11-6.
Senior
Pierre Kohler and sophomore
Alvaro Arce were first off the court in doubles, after a convincing 6-2 victory at No. 1. However, both No. 2 and 3 doubles fell 7-5 to give the Rams the doubles point and the momentum heading into singles play.
In singles, the Dukes dropped five opening sets, many of which were tight. Junior
Damon Roberts dropped the opening set in a tiebreak before eventually losing 7-6 (1), 6-4 at No. 4. Junior
Paul Mendoza was edged 7-5 in the first before slipping in the second set, 6-2, at the No. 3 slot.

Tate Steinour got the start at No. 6, his fifth of the dual season, but dropped his match 6-3, 6-2. Kohler earned the sole singles victory for JMU, a 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Arvid Noren at No. 1, once the match was already clinched.

I think today we actually played better than we did against Delaware, earlier in the week. I have to give credit to VCU, which is a solid team from top to bottom. We competed well today, and I hope this performance raises our overall level and mentality for future matches.
