HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne announced the hiring of Cameron Straughn as the team physician on Thursday morning.
Â
"We are excited to welcome Dr. Straughn back to his alma mater to serve as the department's team physician," Bourne said. "He has built an extensive background in the realm of sport healthcare and is extremely qualified to take this next step at James Madison. We look forward to his contributions to our advanced approach to the health and welfare of our student-athletes as part of our integrated health and sport performance model."
Â
Straughn spent a year at Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky where he completed his fellowship and graduated in June 2019. While in Kentucky, Straughn was the team physician for multiple sports at the university while serving as the team physician for all varsity sports at Kentucky State and Georgetown College. Â
Â
"I'm truly honored to be returning to JMU as team physician," said Straughn. "Dr. Kennedy and Dr. Diduch both did a wonderful job as team physicians and leave behind a legacy of excellence. I look forward to serving the athletic community, continuing to advance the medical care of student-athletes and doing my part to help them succeed both on and off the field."Â Â
Â
Prior to his work in Kentucky, Straughn worked three years at Floyd Family Medicine Residency in Rome, Georgia. For the 2016-2017 season, he was the team physician for men's and women's basketball at Shorter University and served as the primary physician for the Gulf South Conference Track meet in '17.Â
Â
While in Georgia, Straughn provided sideline coverage for various high school football programs and performed pre-participation school physicals for two years. From 2017-18, Straughn took part in independent moonlighting at Floyd Urgent Care where he treated a variety of illnesses and office-based procedures. Â
Â
"We are thrilled to have Dr. Straughn come back home to JMU and join our staff as the team physician," Director of Sports Medicine
Tom Kuster said. "This position serves a critical function within our healthcare delivery system and demonstrates our commitment to student-athlete health and wellbeing. Myself and the sports medicine staff, as well as our partners at UVA Orthopedics, are eager to start working with him!"
Â
Straughn received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from JMU, graduating magna cum laude in 2011. During his undergrad as a Duke, he received the R.D. Cool Award given to an outstanding junior chemistry student before earning the J.W. Chappell Award which is given to a senior chemistry student pursuing a career in medicine. Straughn completed his medical doctorate from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2015 at the Virginia campus.
