WALLACE, N.C. - Freshmen
Kendall Turner and
Amelia Williams posted their first under-par rounds of the season to lead the way for the James Madison women's golf team on Monday, as the Dukes posted a strong start at the River Landing Classic, hosted by UNCW at the par-72, 5,960-yard River Landing Golf Club.
Â
Turner paced the Dukes with an opening-round 70 (-2) to kick things off on Monday, racking up five birdies through her first 18 holes to close the round tied for fifth out of 72 players, while Williams was just one stroke back in a tie for seventh, having carded a steady 71 (-1) that saw the freshman card 15 pars to set a new collegiate low.
Â
After a frost delay pushed the opening tee shots back to 10 a.m., the 13-team field completed its first round and was more than halfway through its second when play was suspended due to darkness at 6:14 p.m.
Â
As a team, the Dukes carded an opening-round 293 (+5) to close the first of three rounds in sole possession of seventh, two strokes behind sixth-place East Tennessee State. When play was called in the second round, JMU had moved into a tie for fifth, playing the opening 13 holes in one-under.
Â
Sophomore
Kate Owens posted an opening-round 74 (+2) to tie for 25th through 18 holes, while sophomore
Carly Lyvers (78) and freshman
Ana Tsiros (80) closed out the JMU scoring in ties for 48th and 57th, respectively.

QUOTING COACH BAKER
"It was unfortunate to have a strong round halted when we did, but I'm happy with the way we played today. These days continue to be steps forward, both in scoring and confidence, and we know what we're capable of as we try to have a strong finish tomorrow."
