Lacrosse Drops Home Battle To No. 13 Rutgers

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison lacrosse fell at Sentara Park to No. 13 Rutgers, as the Scarlet Knights scored the final six goals en route to a 12-5 decision on Sunday.
JMU fell to 3-4 on the season while Rutgers remained undefeated at 8-0.

Redshirt junior attacker Kacey Knobloch scored her second hat trick of the season for the Dukes, with all of her goals scored in the first half. Redshirt senior Katie Checkosky assisted on two of Knobloch's goals, while redshirt junior Mairead Durkin had a pair of ground balls and caused turnovers, and has caused multiple opponent turnovers in each of JMU's first seven games.

The Dukes' five goals were their fewest scored since March 21, 2021 at North Carolina.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – Rutgers 1, James Madison 1
Rutgers committed two penalties in the first 4:21, but JMU was not able to score on either woman-up opportunity. Knobloch opened the scoring to give JMU a 1-0 lead, but the Scarlet Knights tied things 37 seconds later.
Second Quarter – Rutgers 6, James Madison 4
The Scarlet Knights scored four times in five minutes to build a 5-2 lead, but JMU cut the lead to one with goals by redshirt sophomore Taylor Marchetti and Knobloch. Rutgers then scored the final goal of the period to grab a two-score halftime lead.
Third Quarter – Rutgers 9, James Madison 5
Senior Ava Frantz scored in her fifth straight game to cut the lead to one early in the third, but the Dukes would be held off the scoreboard for the rest of the quarter. Rutgers scored twice in the final minute to push their lead to the biggest of the game at 9-5.

Redshirt senior Molly Dougherty made four saves in the quarter, but Rutgers kept their advantage for most of the period, adding three goals with under four minutes to play. JMU's offense was shut out in a quarter for the first time this season.

- JMU turned the ball over 20 times for the second straight game, the first time committing 20 or more turnovers in consecutive games since February 15-19, 2017.
- Rutgers' 12 goals was its fewest in a game this season, and its 19 turnovers committed tied a season high.
- JMU was 18-20 in clears while forcing six failed clears from the Scarlet Knights.
- The Dukes were outcontrolled on the draw 14-7, including 7-2 in the second half.
