Lacrosse Drops Midweek Contest At Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – James Madison lacrosse had its three-game winning streak snapped, falling 14-10 at Penn State on Wednesday at Holuba Hall.
Penn State (3-2) used an 8-0 run across the second and third quarters before thwarting a JMU (3-3) comeback attempt.

Redshirt sophomore Isabella Peterson and junior Tai Jankowski each had hat tricks on the afternoon. The duo has combined for 32 of JMU's 66 goals this season and totaled six hat tricks. Peterson also led JMU with six draw controls. Redshirt junior Rachel Matey led the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers while grabbing five draw controls.

The Dukes lost a game in which they scored at least 10 goals for the first time since March 26, 2021.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – James Madison 2, Penn State 2
The Nittany Lions struck first, scoring a pair of goals in the first 1:37. Senior Ava Frantz scored in her fourth straight game to get the Dukes on the board, while senior Brittany Bill put away the tying goal.
Second Quarter – Penn State 6, James Madison 5
Back-to-back goals by Peterson jolted JMU to a 5-3 lead, but PSU stormed back with three late goals in a span of 54 seconds to grab the halftime lead. The Dukes trailed at the half for just the second game this season (North Carolina).
Third Quarter – Penn State 11, James Madison 8
Penn State dominated early in the period, extending the lead to six with five goals over the first 8:12. However, Jankowski pulled JMU back in the contest with her hat trick over a span of 2:28 late in the period. JMU outdrew Penn State 7-2 during the quarter.

Fourth Quarter – Penn State 14, James Madison 10
Peterson and Bill scored 34 seconds apart to bring the Dukes within one, at 11-10, with 9:12 to play. However, Penn State responded 42 seconds later to break the 5-0 JMU run before scoring twice to put the game out of reach. Two of the Nittany Lions' goals came from free-position shots. Â
