LYNCHBURG, Va. – Freshman
Esteve Agusti put together a strong week in singles and the team of
Edson Sanchez and
Francisco Sinopoli found momentum in doubles, as James Madison men's tennis completed its week at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship (Oct. 11-14) at the Liberty Tennis Courts.
JMU won a combined 13 events, going 7-7 in singles play and 6-3 in doubles action.
Agusti led the way with a 3-1 record, advancing through the silver bracket into the gold bracket, finishing as one of the final 32 singles competitors.
On the doubles side, Sanchez and Sinopoli tuned in a 4-1 doubles mark, with a trio of wins in the bronze bracket and a single win in the silver bracket. The tandem of Agusti and
Aathreya Mahesh also went 2-1 in the bronze doubles bracket.
Singles Play
Bronze Bracket
- Mahesh fell in his opening round match to George Mason's Jacco Arends by scores of 6-2, 6-3.
- He concluded singles with a consolation victory over Norfolk State's Boris Lunin, at 6-0, 6-0.
Silver Bracket
- Agusti racked up three victories to advance through to the gold bracket. In his opening bout, he rallied past Morgan State's Mikeal Carpenter with a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win. He also picked up a second-round win against Delaware's Alexandre Gluck, at 6-3, 7-5, and downed Liberty's Chase Robinson, 6-3, 7-6 (6) to move on.
- Sinopoli opened up with a three-set win over Bucknell's Oscar Bain, at 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, before falling in a third-set tiebreak to Richmond's Paxton Pritchard.
- Julian Lozano claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win versus Delaware's Ismail Saadi, but dropped a three-set affair to Virginia Tech's Manuel Goncalves, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-1.
- Youssef Sadek notched a comeback win in the opening round, posting a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 triumph against Duquesne's Kaipo Marshall. He later dropped a 7-5, 6-3 match to Richmond's Daniel Kliebhan.
- Sanchez also competed in a pair of matches, falling both.
Gold Bracket
- After winning three in a row to reach the round of 32, Agusti's run closed in the first round with a tight 7-5, 7-5 loss to Penn State's Loren Byers.
- Agusti wouldn't play a consolation match due to scheduling issues on Sunday.
Doubles Play
Bronze Bracket
- Sanchez and Sinopoli cruised through the bronze bracket with three straight wins. Their first match was the closest, as they beat Mount St. Mary's Victor Mignot and Elliot Stevens, 8-6.
- The next two matches would be easier, as they earned an 8-4 win versus Loyola's Nicholas Haggar and Nick Lawliss and an 8-3 victory against Richmond's Dylan Atkinson and Sebastian Miano.
- Agusti and Mahesh opened strong, posting an 8-2 win over Loyola's Oliver Davey and Jorge Quintana. They also won 8-4 against Temple's Erden Er and Adam Kresina, before just missing the silver bracket with a tough 8-7 (4) setback to Bucknell's Brendan McDonald and Amar Tahirovic in the third third.
Silver Bracket
- Sanchez and Sinopoli continued their strong week, rolling past Mount's Luke Papayoanou and Aaron Thompson, 8-1.
- Their ride ended in the second round of the silver, dropping an 8-6 decision to Temple's Gregoire Barety and Dante Russo.
Gold Bracket
- Lozano and Sadek dropped their lone doubles bout of the week, 8-1, to Virginia's Mans Dahlberg and Dylan Dietrich.
- Like Agusti in gold singles, they wouldn't play a consolation match Sunday due to scheduling conflicts.
