WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary cruised through doubles and won four singles matches in straight sets to earn a 5-2 victory against James Madison in non-conference men's tennis action Saturday morning at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
The Tribe improved to 1-2 this spring, while the Dukes fell to 1-4.
The Dukes got super tiebreak victories from
Youssef Sadek and
Edson Sanchez to provide JMU's two points.
W&M won doubles with convincing wins on courts one and two, while getting singles triumphs on courts one, three, four and six to earn its first win in 2024.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- Satchel Benn and Oliver Hague opened the match with a 6-2 victory over Julian Lozano and Sadek on court two.
- The Tribe clinched the doubles point on court one, where Bill Duo and Konstantinos Raptis got past Esteve Agusti and Aathreya Mahesh.
- On court three, Markus Giersiepen and Edson Sanchez led Alexander Karman and Alexandre Leblanc, 5-4, when it went unfinished.
Singles Play
- W&M doubled its lead on court three, as Benn downed Agusti, 6-4, 6-1.
- The Tribe extended the lead to 3-0, as Hague defeated Giersiepen, 6-3, 6-4, on court four.
- The hosts clinched the match on court six, where Albert Hansen rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Harrison Lee.
- William & Mary got its final point on court one, as Leblanc held off Lozano, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
- JMU got on the board over on court five, as Sanchez rallied past Nikita Bortnichek, winning the super tiebreaker, 10-7. He won the match by scores of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (7).
- The Dukes closed the day when Sadek also bounced back for a 10-3 victory in the super tiebreaker, beating Raptis on court two, 4-6, 7-6 (1), 1-0 (3).
