JMU Falls After Late Southern Miss Surge
HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison led 3-1 before Southern Miss stormed back to win the final three singles matches to down the Dukes 4-3 on Thursday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference men's tennis action at Hillside Courts.
The Golden Eagles improved to 7-5 on the year and 3-1 in Sun Belt play, while the Dukes fell to 7-10 overall and 0-5 in league matches.
JMU won the doubles point while claiming singles bouts on courts one and two.
Youssef Sadek was the lone Duke to go 2-0 on the day, as he and
Francisco Sinopoli clinched the doubles point.
Julian Lozano also had a dominant straight-set singles victory.
Southern Miss staved off seven match points in the final matchup, and each of the final two wins came after the respective USM athlete won five straight games in their third sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU took the early advantage with 6-4 comeback win on court three. Trailing 3-1, Markus Giersiepen and Edson Sanchez came back to defeat Pasawee Reansuwong and Shamirul Shahril.
- The Dukes captured the doubles point and 1-0 lead on court two, as Sadek and Sinopoli secured a thrilling 7-5 win over Olimjon Nabiev and Saheb Sodhi.
- Esteve Agusti and Lozano trailed 6-5 on court one when the match was abandoned.
Singles Play
- Lozano doubled JMU's lead to 2-0, dropping just three games en route to a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Shahril on court two.
- Southern Miss got on the board with a triumph on court four, where Hanry Lamchinniah took down Sinopoli, 6-2, 6-2.
- JMU extended the lead to 3-1 on court one, as Sadek pulled away from Dakotah Bobo for a 6-2, 6-3 win.
- The Eagles pulled within 3-2 on court six, as Reansuwong rallied in the second set to beat Mario Pena 6-1, 7-5.
- JMU neared the clinching point, but USM used a pair of comebacks on court five to square the match at 3-3. Olle Noltorp trailed Giersiepen most notably 4-1 in the third set before reeling off five straight wins to earn a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win.
- In the final match, Nabiev staved off seven match points to rally past Agusti. Down 5-2, he overcame a love-40 deficit in one game and 30-40 in another while winning a pivotal deuce point to come back for a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 win.
