JONESBORO, Ark. – James Madison won the doubles point and earned four singles victories, including a pair in three sets, to capture a 5-2 Sun Belt Conference women's tennis win at Arkansas State on Saturday afternoon at the A-State Tennis Courts.
The win moved the Dukes above .500 for the first time this season, as they improved to 8-7 on the year and 4-2 in Sun Belt play. The Red Wolves fell to 7-10 overall and 1-5 in conference bouts.
JMU is now 2-0 all-time against A-State, adding in its 7-0 win in Harrisonburg on April 2, 2023.
Cate Broerman and
Reka Matko each went 2-0 on the day, winning in both doubles and singles. Joining them in the singles win column were
Daria Munteanu and
Ines Oliveira on the top-two courts, with Munteanu clinching the match.
The match was played in front a record crowd of 784 spectators in Jonesboro, as part of Arkansas State's Family Fun Fest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU won the doubles point by taking two of three, which included clinching the 1-0 lead on court two.
- The team of Matko and Hope Moulin opened things up with a convincing 6-1 win against Nejla Zukic and Rebbeca Brody.
- A-Stat got a 6-4 win on court one, as Yasmine Humbert and Sarah Millard downed Munteanu and Oliveira.
- Broerman and Prudente secured the doubles point, grabbing a 6-3 victory from Abigail Thurmer and Anna Grigoreva.
Singles Play
- JMU doubled its lead to 2-0 with a victory on court three, where Broerman dispatched Zukic, 6-2, 6-1.
- A-State got on the board over on court four, as Millard completed her 2-0 day with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Moulin.
- Oliveira strengthened the lead to 3-1 on court two, as she ran away in the second set for a 6-4, 6-2 win against Grigoreva.
- The Red Wolves stayed in the fight, earning a three-set win on court six. After splitting sets, Ariadna Fernandez held off Prudente for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win.
- Munteanu clinched the win on court one, winning consecutive games at the end to upend Humbert by scores of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
- The final match went the distance and included staving off match points. Matko found herself down 5-2 to Brody in the third and after overcoming a match-point opportunity for the hosts, she forced a tiebreak where she won three straight points to wrap up a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5).
MATCH NOTES
- Matko and Moulin continue their strong spring as a doubles tandem, as Saturday's win moved the duo to 5-0 in dual matches.
- Munteanu has now won five straight singles bouts, improving to 10-3 this spring and 6-2 at the top spot.
- Broerman captured her fourth straight win, all while playing on court three.
- JMU has now won three of its last four matches and six of the last eight after a 2-5 start.
