CONWAY, S.C. – James Madison women's tennis opened fall tournament play by claiming 25 total victories at the annual Lynn Stevens Memorial Invitational (Sept. 20-21) at the Lynn Stevens Tennis Complex.
The Dukes competed in a hidden-dual format with bouts against host Coastal Carolina, App State and Campbell. JMU went 17-5 in singles play, while posting an 8-3 ledger in doubles action.
Sophie Williams went unbeaten in her first weekend playing with the Dukes, as the Florida transfer was 3-0 in both doubles and singles.
Mia Saveljic and
Daria Munteanu also went 5-1 each, which included 3-0 singles marks and 2-1 doubles records for the two.
Ines Oliveira and
Elena Kraleva each went 2-1 in singles, while the tandem of
Hayley Glen and
Reka Matko were 2-0 in doubles.
Corinna Rietmann also won three total matches, including a pair of singles bouts.
The Dukes opened play Friday by splitting doubles play with host Coastal. In singles play, they took six of eight from App State before going 6-0 against Campbell.
On Saturday, JMU went 3-1 in doubles against App State before finishing doubles play with a 3-0 mark against Campbell. To round of the weekend, the Dukes went 5-3 in singles versus the Chanticleers, which included wins in the top-five singles slots.
Doubles Play
- In Friday's matchup with Coastal Carolina, JMU picked up victories at the Nos. 2 and 4 spots. Saveljic and Williams notched their first JMU win by downing CCU's Sarah Clark and Brooke Rogers, 6-3. Glen and Matko cruised past Kaya Hersh and Paula Cabrer, 6-0.
- On Saturday morning, JMU claimed wins over App State at Nos. 1, 2 and 4. Kraleva and Williams rolled to a 6-1 win over Ruby Broadbent and Naledi Manyube.
- On court two, Munteanu and Oliveira took down Taya Powell and Olwyn Ryan-Bovey, 6-3, while Glen and Matko turned in another 6-0 triumph, this time against Cassidy Carlson and Riley Collins.
- Against Campbell, Kraleva and Williams held off Ofer Kivity and Deren Ozel, 6-4. Munteanu and Oliveira defeated Sandra Mari Marti and Veronika Prospalova, 6-3, while Saveljic and Rietmann rolled past Jessa Maras and Sonia Pieczynska, 6-0.
Singles Play
- JMU opened singles play Friday going 6-2 against the Mountaineers. After App got wins on the top-two courts, JMU had five straight set wins with a super tiebreak victory.
- Saveljic downed Rya Bovey, 6-3, 6-3, while Williams rallied past Manyube, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11). Munteanu took a 6-4, 6-4 decision from Broadbet and Rietmann earned her first singles victory with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Alexi Cleveland. Matko rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph versus Carlson, and Glen breezed past Collins, 6-2, 6-0.
- To wrap up day one, JMU swept Campbell on all six courts. That included every match ending in straight sets. Highlighting that match was Oliveira, who won 6-0, 6-0 over Maras. No Camel won more than seven total games against any JMU player.
- JMU closed the weekend winning at the top-five courts against Coastal Carolina.
- Kraleva beat Nicole Abel, 6-4, 6-3 on court one, and Oliveira claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Brunelle Kouam on court two.
- JMU also got wins from Saveljic in comeback fashion (5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (6)), Williams by not conceding a game (6-0, 6-0) and Munteanu (7-6 (5), 6-1.
