ORLANDO, Fla. – Future James Madison women's tennis student-athlete Brooklyn Hoffman is a national champion, as she won the doubles title in the 18U division at the USTA National Winter Championship, contested at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
Hoffman teamed with Sasha Dimitrov, as the duo went 6-0 as an unseeded team. They defeated three seeded teams including the Nos. 2 and 3 tandems in the event and claimed three-set triumphs in each of their final four matches.
In the championship match, Hoffman and Dimitrov held off second-seeded Anna Bennett and Emerey Gross in three sets, at 6-4, 0-6, 6-2. Prior to the title bout, the two defeated third-seeded Bella Payne and Sara Shumate, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
They also claimed a super-tiebreak victory against 11th-seeded Lillie Murphy and Addison Bowman, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) in the quarterfinals and won a thriller in comeback fashion in the round of 16 over Blair Gill and Reiley Rhodes, at 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (11-9).
On the singles side, she went 3-1 and reached the round of 16 before falling to the eventual national runner-up. In each of her singles victories, she won them all in straight sets.
JMU opens the spring dual-match season on Saturday, Jan. 11 when it travels to Durham, N.C., to face Duke in an 11 a.m. match. The Dukes face six Atlantic Coast Conference opponents over their first seven matches, all of which are on the road.
