Head Coach
Joshua Walters Sr. completed the James Madison women’s soccer coaching staff on April 5, 2018, announcing the hire of former Northwestern Ohio head coach
Stuart Gore as Associate Head Coach prior to the 2018 campaign.
In his first season at JMU, Gore helped lead the Dukes to a remarkable turning around, turning a 1-6 start into an 11-8-1 campaign that saw that Dukes capture the CAA Regular Season Championship. Along the way, the Dukes had five different players named to All-CAA teams, highlighted by Haley Crawford and Ginger Deel earning First Team nods.
Gore comes to Harrisonburg directly from UNOH, having served as the Racers’ only women’s soccer head coach in school history since his hiring in 2012 and the program’s inaugural season in 2013. UNOH saw immediate success under Gore, winning at least 20 matches in all four seasons after Gore’s first at the helm and capturing the 2016 NAIA National Championship in the program’s fourth season.
In addition to the 2016 national title campaign that saw the Racers finish 23-2-1, Gore’s teams added three conference titles across his tenure, while reaching the NAIA National Championship match two additional times in 2014 and 2015. Gore coached three national players of the year and 23 All-Americans in his five seasons at UNOH, including a staggering eight All-Americans this past season.
Prior to UNOH, Gore accumulated coaching experience at every level of soccer. Just before joining the Racers, he was the head coach for the Philadelphia Fever of the WPSL (2011-12) and the Director of Coaching at Washington United Soccer Club (2009-12). At the collegiate level, Gore was an assistant coach for Rider University and spent time in the Colonial Athletic Association as an men’s soccer assistant coach at Delaware from 2009-11.
As a player, Gore represented England at nearly every youth level, playing for his country’s U14 through U18 teams from 1993-2001, in addition to competing with Leeds United from 1996-2000. In America, Gore was a two-time All-Conference pick at the University of Montevallo, where he graduated in 2004, before signing a professional contract with UD Lorca of the Spanish Segunda División.
Gore joins the completed women’s soccer coaching staff at JMU alongside
Colleen Boyd,
who joined the Dukes in March as an assistant coach working primarily with the goalkeepers.
“This is an incredible coaching and support staff with Stuart, Colleen Boyd, Michael Poma, Leah Schoen and Robbie Ormsby,” Walters said. “I could not have dreamed of a staff who cares more about the growth and experience of our student-athletes and that has the talent and wisdom to guide the program to meet our goals. Our expectations are high for this program and it shows when we assemble a staff of this caliber.”
The Dukes, who return nine starters and four All-Colonial Athletic Association picks from the 2017 team that closed the regular season with a 9-9 record and earned their fifth consecutive CAA Tournament berth, will continue their six-match spring schedule next Friday, April 13, when they welcome Radford to Sentara Park at 7 p.m.
All home matches are open to the public and free to all spectators.
