LUTHERVILLE, Md., March 26, 2010 - James Madison women's tennis defeated Towson 7-0 in the opener of the Colonial Athletic Association Round Robin Tournament at the Greenspring Racquet Club in Lutherville, Md. on Friday.
The Dukes won their fourth straight to improve to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the CAA. Towson dropped to 3-10 and 0-3 respectively.
After splitting the first two doubles matches, JMU clinched the point with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 from senior Kelly Maxwell (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and junior Ida Donner (Durham, N.C./Jordan). The win was the first action during the spring season for Maxwell and Donner.
Freshmen Megan Douglass (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's) and Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County Secondary School) picked up Madison's other doubles win, defeating Beth Daub and Aandria Carr 8-1 at No. 2.
JMU took control of the match during singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Freshman Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) set the tone with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Carr at No. 1. The rookie won her fourth straight match to improve to 12-10 this year.
Douglass, Nguyen and junior Kristin Nimitz (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) all extended their personal winning streaks to four matches, respectively winning at Nos. 3, 4 and 5. Maxwell and senior Rebecca Erickson (Rye, N.Y./Heritage Academy) picked up the other two singles wins for the Dukes.
JMU continues play in the CAA Round Robin on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. as they take on Delaware. The Dukes face UNC Wilmington at 9 a.m. on Sunday to conclude the tournament.
