HARRISONBURG, Va., April 10, 2010 - James Madison swept doubles play and won four of six singles matches to close the 2009-10 regular season with a 5-2 win over George Washington at the Hillside Tennis Courts in Harrisonburg, Va. on Saturday.
The Dukes won seven of their last eight matches to finish the season 8-7. GW dropped to 9-9 with the loss.
JMU grabbed the early lead 1-0 with three wins in doubles play. Freshmen Megan Douglass (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's) and Michelle Nguyen (Springfield, Va./South County Secondary School) started things off with an 8-4 win over Dorota Lysienia and Meg Tyner at No. 3. Senior Rebecca Erickson (Rye, N.Y./Heritage Academy) and junior Kristin Nimitz (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) sealed the point by triumphing over Sasha Gluck and Jacqueline Corba at No. 2. Sophomore Kinsey Pate (Matthews, N.C./Butler) and freshman Katherine Bulling (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) finished the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 1.
After GW battled back to take a 2-1 lead, Nguyen brought the Dukes back to even, beating Tyner 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5. Douglass put Madison up 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jennifer Hirsh at No. 4. Nimitz clinched the match by beating Gluck 6-2, 7-6 at No. 6. Erickson outlasted Lysienia 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 3 to pick up JMU's fifth point.
JMU returns to the courts April 15-18 in Norfolk, Va. in the 2010 CAA Championships.
