Dukes Comeback Bid Cut Short in 4-3 Loss to College of Charleston

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison women's tennis' comeback bid came up just short as the Dukes fell 4-3 to College of Charleston in their Colonial Athletic Association regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon.
JMU drops to 12-7 (2-3 CAA) this season while CofC improves to 12-12 (4-1 CAA) overall.
The match came down to a pair of three-set thrillers at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Freshman Kimmy Herrock battled back from a 7-6(5) loss in No. 4's set one to Jenny Falcone to take a 6-4 win in set two, forcing a decisive third set. Fellow freshman Dylan Owenstook a one-set lead over Grace Baker at No. 5 with a 6-4 win before dropping set two 7-5 to send the match into a final set.
Owens tied the match at 3-all for JMU when she dropped Baker 6-2 in the final set for match point. Herrock trailed Falcone 3-0 in the third set before winning the next two games to cut it to a 3-2 Cougar lead. Falcone, however, won the next three games to close out the set 6-2 and clinch match point for College of Charleston.
The Cougars swept the doubles point, beginning with an 8-4 victory by Samantha Maddox and Mara Argyriou over Herrock and sophomore Rebecca Harris at No. 2. Baker and Brooke McAmis clinched the point for CofC with an 8-5 win at No. 3.
At No. 1 doubles, senior Taylor Pinchoffand sophomore Alex Huie battled back from a 3-6 deficit to tie their match at 6-all before Falcone and Katherine Schofield, ranked No. 80 in the nation, were able to win the final two games for an 8-6 victory.
Charleston pushed to a 2-0 advantage with a two-set win (6-0, 6-1) by Schofield over Huie at No. 3 singles.
JMU began its comeback attempt at No. 6 singles when Harris posted straight 6-2 wins over Sarah Jane Jones. Nelson tied the match at 2-all with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Argyriou at No. 2 singles.
The knotted score, however, was quickly broken with a 7-5, 6-2 win by Maddox over Pinchoff at No. 1 singles, giving the Cougars a 3-2 advantage.
The Dukes wrap up the regular season at home on Sunday, April 12 against Morgan State at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early as JMU celebrates seniors Taylor Pinchoffand Sarah Khan in their final home match.
