HARRISONBURG, Va. – Elon won four of six singles matches, including the final decision to hold off James Madison women's tennis 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Phoenix improved to 13-4, while the Dukes fell to 9-4, as all four setbacks have come by a 4-3 decision this spring.
JMU swept doubles play and won two singles matches in the loss.
The Dukes opened the match with an early 1-0 lead after winning every doubles contest. Senior
Jona Roka and sophomore
Daria Afanasyeva rolled to a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles against Victoria Saldh and Sofia Edo, and sophomores
Amanda Nord and
Kylie Moulin claimed a 6-2 victory versus Uma Nayar and Kiana Rizzolo at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point.
Sophomores
Daniela Voloh and
Natalia Nikolopoulou rounded out doubles with a 6-4 comeback win on court one over Alex Koniaev and Olivia Archer.
In singles play, JMU led by a set in two of first three singles matches before Elon rallied to take wins on courts one through three, grabbing a 3-1 lead.
The Dukes tied it at 3-3 with wins at No. 5 and No. 4. Nikolopoulou cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Shauna Galvin, and Voloh won a three setter against Rizzolo by scores of 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.
The match was decided on court six, where Edo rallied past Nord, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.
