BOSTON, Mass. - James Madison leads the field of 30 teams by turning in several personal records and new entries on the all-time top-10 list following the second day of the 2016 Eastern College Athletic Association (ECAC) Indoor Championships Saturday. The Dukes have 20 team points to lead second-place Providence (18) and have several excellent opportunities to add to the scoring total in Sunday's finals.Â
Junior
Ebony Owusu-Sampah led the charge with a first-place finish in the long jump. The Woodbridge, Va. native set a personal record with a jump of 5.97 meters to top the field of 22 athletes and move from fourth to third on the program's top-10 list, passing Adrienne Mayo's mark of 5.91 in 2006. Junior
Kennedy King also impressed in the long jump, finishing fourth with a jump of 5.87 meters to set a personal record and move from seventh to fifth on the all-time charts.
Competing in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles,
Aereale Scott turned in an excellent performance. The sophomore qualified for Sunday's 60-meter hurdles semifinal with a seventh-place finish thanks to a time of 8.72 seconds, then qualified for the 60-meter dash finals with a time of 7.72 seconds. She then ran second 8.72 in the 60-meter hurdles semi-finals to move on to the finals on Sunday.
Senior
Kathleen Stewart left her mark on the day with a personal record time of 16:43.21 in the 5,000-meter run to place fourth out of 25 runners. The time places Stewart third on the all-time top-10 list after she shaved more than 25 seconds off her previous career-best time of 17:08.79 from the 2016 Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup.
Also showing well at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center Saturday were one-mile run competitiors
Carol Strock and
Tessa Mundell. The duo finished sixth and 11th with times of 4:55.83 and 4:56.11 respectively. Strock advances to Sunday's finals while Mundell surpassed her previous PR of 4:58.47, just missing out on advancing to the final round with Strock.
Keeping with the theme of all-time top-10 finishes, sophomore
Tyrah Burrow moved up one spot from third to second on the indoor 400-meter dash list with a time of 55.75 seconds to beat the 56.00 she put up at the 2015 ECAC Indoor Championships.
Rounding out the Dukes' standout performances was the 4x800-meter relay team of
Madeleine McCarty,
Haley Mahn,
Erica Gray and
Erica Jackson, who placed ninth out of 17 teams to qualify for the finals and cement their place in eighth in JMU history with a time of 9:03.40.
UP NEXTThe Dukes that qualified for the finals of their event will return to action tomorrow for the third and final day of the ECAC Indoor Championships. The distance medley team and graduate student
