BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – James Madison track & field scored in two events on day one at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship on Monday night inside the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The Dukes finished fourth in the distance medley relay to pick up five points, ran by the quartet of
Alayna Gifford,
Darian Harris,
Merrick Mock and
Kylie Brooks in a season-best 11:49.93.
Sidney Walters was the lone individual for JMU to score with an eighth-place effort of 17:24.73 in the 5,000 meters – the fastest time by a Duke this season.
Elsewhere on the track,
Holly Mpassy – who entered the meet with the fastest 400-meter time of the season at 55.20 – improved her time with a season-best 55.11 for second in the prelims.
Jordyn Henderson won the third heat of the 60-meter hurdles prelims to automatically qualify for Tuesday's final. Later in the meet,
Kaia Putman registered a 24.08 clip for seventh in the prelims of the 200-meter dash – the third-fastest time in program history.
Arkansas State is in the lead with 29 points through four of 17 events scored, followed by Texas State (27), App State (26), Marshall (22) and Louisiana (21). JMU currently sits in 12th with six points
How It Happened
- Christine Fitzgerald produced a career-best time of 56.38 in the 400-meter dash – good for eighth in program history – but failed to qualify for the final after placing ninth.
- Putman also ran a season-best time of 7.53 in the 60-meter dash but finished 13th to miss out on advancing to the finals.
- Kam'Dyn Thomas recorded a career-best 8.82 clip in the 60-meter hurdles to improve her No. 10 time in the JMU record book.
