CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 10, 2014 – Freshmen Kennedy King (Hampton, Va./Phoebus) and Annie Johnson (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) led the James Madison track & field team on the second and final day of the Virginia Challenge. King finished second in the long jump, while Johnson qualified for the ECAC Championships with her time in the 200-meter dash.
King leapt 5.75 meters for a runner-up finish in a field of 11 jumpers. Freshman Ebony Owusu-Sampah (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) was sixth with a leap of 5.62 meters.
Johnson ran a personal-best time of 24.71 seconds to take eighth out of 20 runners in the 200-meter dash. She is the first JMU runner to qualify for ECACs in the event this season.
Junior Jasmine Waddell (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) added a fourth-place finish for the Dukes, competing in an 11-runner field in the 100-meter hurdles. She posted a time of 14.28 in the finals, after qualifying with a 14.34 in the preliminaries. Junior Nicole Gilbert (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) also competed in the event and set a new personal record with a time of 15.11.
JMU will travel to Princeton, N.J. for the ECAC Championships, which will be held from May 16-18.
