HARRISONBURG, Va. - Graduate studentÂ
Amber Monroe will represent the James Madison track & field team at the 2016 USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held on Saturday, March 11 in Portland, Ore.
Monroe will compete in the shot put after placing winning the event in five of seven meets she competed in this winter. The Miami, Fla., native hit the ground running after joining the program, breaking the JMU indoor shot put record with a throw of 15.45 meters in her debut at the Kentucky Invitational in January. She went on to break her own record the next two meets before recording a season-best 16.46 meters at the Ohio State-hosted Buckeye Tune-Up in Columbus, Ohio.
"We look forward to continuing the season she's been having," Head CoachÂ
Chereé Hicks said. "We're hoping to get Amber to the Olympic Trials this summer and she can qualify for the trials with a PR this weekend. This is good preparation since she'll be competing against professional athletes and top collegiate talent."
Monroe's personal record of 17.18 meters for the indoor shot put, which she set at the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships, still stands as the second-best throw in school history at the University of Miami.
