At JMU: Returning All-America and all-conference performer… Academic All-America candidate…fourth-year Duke who has become one of Division I-AA’s top OL after starting his college career as a wrestler at Virginia… leader on the OL and a “coach’s dream,” said OL coach Curt Newsome… mixes intelligence with physical play and has become more effective as he has added size… in 2004 started at OG and was first-team All-America by Associated Press, first-team All-A-10, first-team All-Eastern College Athletic Conference, and first-team All-Virginia by the state’s sports information directors and the Roanoke Times… returned to OG after being the team’s center in 2003 when Leon Steinfeld was injured… came to JMU for the 2002 season after wrestling as a freshman at Virginia in 2001-02… moved to OG from the DL midway through 2002 and immediately took a starter’s role for the team’s final five games… on defense in 2002, was involved in seven tackles… had two assists vs. New Hampshire and Maine, primary stops vs. Hampton and Delaware and an assist vs. Villanova.
Before JMU: At Northumberland High School was all-state in football and a two-time state wrestling champion… lettered four times in football, wrestling, and track and field… second-team all-state in soccer and a sixth-place state finisher in the shot put in track and field… state runner-up in wrestling as a sophomore and a fifth-place finisher as a freshman.
Personal: Matthew Jacob Magerko… born Dec. 22, 1982… has completed a kinesiology major, sports management concentration, and is in an athletic administration graduate program.
